When this Veteran came to Wisconsin Veterans Network, he was homeless and unemployed. He wasn’t sure how he was going to make ends meet, as the only income he had, was through weekly blood donations for bus passes and food.
Through the assistance of the Department of Workforce Development, the veteran secured full-time employment as a machine operator, earning $13.00 per hour, plus overtime. The Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative purchased new steel-toed boots, which was a requirement to start his new job.
A collaborative program between two federal agencies, HUD_VASH, assisted this veteran with applying for rental assistance, which will allow him to secure a subsidized apartment. HUD-VASH pairs U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development with the Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program to provide housing assistance for homeless veterans and other supportive services.
